Suspect in New York City subway killing

A manhunt is underway for a suspect accused of fatally setting a woman on fire while she slept in a subway car.

The incident occurred Sunday morning on an idle F train at Brooklyn’s Stillwell Avenue station around 7:30 a.m., according to the New York Police Department. Police say the man approached the woman, ignited her, and fled the scene. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead by emergency medical services at the station.

Authorities are investigating the case as a homicide and have released images of the suspect, described as being 5’6” tall, weighing 150 pounds, and between 25 to 30 years old. The photos show him wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans, a knit hat with a red band, and brown boots.

The NYPD is encouraging the public to provide tips via the Crime Stoppers hotline and is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

New York City Councilman Justin Brannan, representing south Brooklyn, acknowledged the “horrific immolation” on social media and announced that the NYPD would update the public. Brannan urged the public to keep the victim in their thoughts and pledged to share more details as they become available.
