U.S. Prisoners Considered for Transfer to El Salvador’s Mega-Jail

El Salvador has proposed an unprecedented deal to the United States to accept deported individuals from any country and also U.S. citizens convicted of violent crimes into its high-security facility, CECOT. This offer aims to reduce costs associated with incarceration in the U.S., where maintaining a prisoner costs significantly more than in El Salvador. Legal experts, however, have pointed out that current laws might largely prevent U.S. citizens from serving their sentences abroad, sparking discussions on legality and ethics.
