On December 21, 2024, a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet was inadvertently shot down over the Red Sea by the USS Gettysburg (CG-64) in an alleged “friendly fire” incident. Both pilots ejected safely and were promptly rescued, with one sustaining minor injuries. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the region, following Houthi missile attacks and subsequent U.S. military responses targeting Houthi positions in Yemen.
